Delicate Scottish Beryl with Scottish Gold and Sterling Silver Ring

From the high granite plateaus of Beinn a’ Bhuird in the Cairngorm Mountains, this Scottish beryl is rarer than a Scottish Sapphire and carries the clarity and quiet strength of the Highlands. Formed deep within pegmatite veins in ancient granite, beryl from this region includes the golden-yellow variety known as heliodor—a name derived from the Greek for "gift of the sun." Its warm, radiant hue echoes the rare sunlight that dances across the mountain tops, especially striking when cut to reveal its glassy brilliance.

This secluded part of the Grampian region is not only home to beryl, but also renowned for yielding smoky quartz (locally known as cairngorm) and topaz. In June 1994, crystal enthusiast Mike Wood discovered heliodor crystals here—a moment of geological history that added a new chapter to Scotland’s rich mineral heritage.

Associated with clarity, wisdom, and vitality, beryl has long been prized for its beauty and metaphysical lore. Whether golden heliodor or pale green to blue beryl, this gemstone is a Highland rarity—quietly powerful, luminous, and steeped in Scottish mountain magic.

Why do silversmiths use 925%? Measured in parts per thousand, pure silver (999%) is too soft so silversmiths mix it with other metals to make it it harder. The purer the metal, the higher the polish, but it is a lot softer (thus less durable). The harder the metal is, the more hard wearing the jewellery is, but it will also tarnish easier as it has less silver content. Therefore, the silver industry set a standard percentage content for fine silver (925); what we know as "sterling silver". At Two Skies our silversmiths use 925 (sterling) silver for ring shafts and moving parts, and a very high 950% on our stones settings, which enables us to get a strong jewellery item with a beautiful and secure stone setting, without any gluing. Each piece of our jewellery is hand stamped with our Two Skies Hallmark alongside the recognised industry 925 Hallmark.
